Brand values are the principles your business actually lives by… the filters behind every decision, from who you hire to how you handle a refund conversation. Real values behave like verbs rather than nice-to-have words. Trust on a plaque changes nothing, whereas trust as a decision filter changes how you book, train, apologise and grow. In this post, we’re uncovering how to tell a lived value from a listed one, what a real value statement looks like embodied and how we surface yours in identity discovery.
Every business has values written down somewhere, if yours are hovering somewhere between the about page and the staff room wall (no shame, that’s where most of them live), this one’s for you.

What are brand values, really?
Your values are your brand’s decision-filters. Logos evolve, palettes get refreshed, platforms come and go, and through all of it the values are the thing that holds steady. They decide which opportunities fit and which get a polite no, how decisions get made when the answer isn’t obvious and what it feels like to work in your business on a busy Thursday.
Put simply, if your visual identity is how your brand looks and your verbal identity is how it sounds, your values are what it feels like. For your clients and just as much for your team.
The wall-plaque problem
Ask a room full of founders to name their values and you’ll hear the same beautiful words (we know, we’ve heard them on repeat). Empathy. Honesty. Trust. Expertise. All genuinely lovely and that’s precisely the trouble. As words, they’re free, everyone walking down the street can claim them. (Lovely words. Terrible security.)
The word is never the problem, but the stillness of it is. A value that never has to do anything ends up treated like the artwork hanging beside it… admired at the launch, invisible by June.
From adjectives to verbs
The difference between a listed value and a lived one is grammar. A real value behaves like a verb and you can test any word on your list by asking these questions of it.
- How does it show up in your decision-making filters, especially the hard calls?
- How does it show up within your team, on the days when everything runs late?
- How do you carry it out with your clients and audience, in the booking text, the consult, the moment something goes wrong?
- How does it shape your future direction, the legacy you want to leave, the moments and memories your brand creates?
If a word on your list can answer questions like those, congratulations, you’ve found a genuine value. The silent ones are adjectives, having a little nap on your wall. This is why ‘doing words’ carry so much weight, compare “flexible” with “boldly embraces change” and feel what happens to your posture. One of them makes you want to stand up and act.
(A starting exercise for you, write down the values that don’t align with your business and why, then find the opposite you’d defend with your life. What you refuse to be reveals a great deal about what you actually are.)
What a living value looks like
Here’s one from our own client work, a value crafted with a skin and wellness clinic. The value word is Illuminate.
Watch what happens beneath the word:
“We educate and enlighten, revealing how skin reflects whole-body wellness. Education sits at the heart of everything we do… When we guide clients, we help them understand their skin as a window into their wellbeing, empowering informed decisions rather than quick fixes. This same commitment to learning applies to us as a team. We continuously develop our expertise so we can offer guidance rooted in understanding the deeper why. Our role is to illuminate what’s possible when we treat skin as part of a whole-body approach to ageing gracefully.”
Notice what it does, it says what the team does, why they do it, who it’s for and where it’s headed, and it commits the team to the same standard it promises clients. Nobody reading it needs the word “education” in a bullet list to believe it (that’s a value with a pulse).
How do we surface your real values in identity discovery?
Behavioural and psychographic questions mostly and the senses do the heavy lifting. What is it like to experience your service through your clients’ eyes, ears, taste buds, heart and head? What’s it like to walk in your team’s shoes for a day? Which day-to-day moments stand out and what’s it actually like to have a conversation with you?
The real values surface as feelings people can describe without being prompted, because they’re already being felt… lived daily by clients and team long before anyone thought to write them down. Aspirations, however lovely, are still out there auditioning. We read for the lived kind (the same beneath-the-soil questions that read your archetype), because authentic values are the only kind a brand can keep its promises with.
What do your brand values feed?
Everything expressive, once they’re read. The archetype is how your values dress when they go out in public. Your palette expresses them (what your colours are quietly saying should agree with what you stand for), and so does your typography. They should survive the whole journey across every place your brand touches a client, from the Instagram tile to the treatment room to the way a running-late client gets greeted.
That’s the consistency test… when the felt thing and the written thing match at every touchpoint, clients trust the brand without being able to say quite why. When they don’t match, clients feel that too. Get the match right and something quietly wonderful happens, your values stop being a page on the website and start being the reason a client can’t quite explain why your place feels different. That unexplainable bit? That’s them, working.
Quick answers on brand values
Think of your mission as the destination you're building toward, the thing that can grow new chapters as the business evolves. Your values travel with you, shaping how you behave the whole way there and they hold steady through every chapter (which is exactly why they're worth getting right early on).
Three to five. Enough to guide decisions, few enough that your team can recite them without looking. If your team can't name them, the values haven't left the document yet.
Run the last-Tuesday test… name a recent decision the value changed. Real values leave evidence, in who you hired, what you said no to, how a difficult conversation went. If a value hasn't changed anything lately, it's either aspirational or decorative and your clients can tell the difference faster than you'd think.
