The short answer? Choose brand fonts the way you choose brand colours, from the psychology of your audience and the archetype underneath your brand, never from the trending page. Most brands need one to three fonts (a hero with quiet support), chosen for legibility at every size and on every screen, given clear roles in a style guide and curated to stay timeless as the business grows. Here’s how to get there, plus what your current fonts are already telling people about your prices.
Because your fonts speak first. Before anyone reads what a caption says, they’ve read how it looks, the same way an outfit introduces you before you’ve said a word (If you’ve ever judged a restaurant by its menu font, you know exactly how this works. We all do it. Your clients are doing it to you right now, lovingly, but still doing it).
Before any of the teaching, here’s the thing we’d like you to hear… you were never taught this. You trained in your craft, you built the business, you learnt the books and the rosters and the hundred other jobs nobody mentioned and somewhere amongst it all the fonts got chosen at 11pm from whatever the website or Canva template offered (of course they did). Consider this the sit-down lesson nobody gave you (don’t be surprised how much of it you already feel in your bones).

What are your fonts saying before anyone reads them?
Fonts gossip, constantly, fluently and mostly about you.
Font psychology is the study of how typefaces shape what we think, feel and do when we meet them. In branding, it means your fonts carry part of the emotional load… if the brand needs a client to feel calm, credible or quietly excited, the type is bearing some of that weight before a single word lands (an underrated little workhorse).
The signals are commercial as much as emotional. A refined serif whispers establishment and lets a premium price list hold its nerve. A rounded sans serif is friendly and approachable, which is wonderful for some brands and quietly discounting for others (picture a luxury facial priced in bubble letters, and… well, exactly). The same sentence set in two different fonts makes two different promises and your clients read the promise long before the consult. Put the same $280 facial in two different typefaces and watch which one gets the raised eyebrow and which one gets booked. Dayuuum fonts (they work fast).
Fonts also age a business the way colours do. A year-one font (the free script that came with the website template, we’ve all met her, she has all the swirls) keeps telling people it’s year one, no matter how good the work has become. If the business has moved upmarket and the type hasn’t, the type is winning that argument.
If reading that gave you a small pang about your own price list, stay with us. Pangs are useful, they’re usually just the business telling you it’s grown.
The trend trap
Here’s the font mistake we see most across health, beauty and wellness and it comes straight from the scroll, choosing fonts from Instagram and TikTok. This font today, that font tomorrow, a new favourite every time the algorithm serves a fresh aesthetic. And look, the scroll is engineered to do this to us, making this month’s font feel like the missing piece is the algorithm’s whole job (deep breath, petal. It comes for us all). It usually travels with font overload too, four or five faces all doing their own thing, like a group chat where everyone’s typing at once.
The deeper problem is where the worry is pointed. Fonts are important (we’d hardly write this post otherwise), but they’re the visible tip of the work. What matters most is the substance beneath the soil… your foundations, your audience and what your brand truly stands for. When those are read properly, the fonts all but choose themselves, calmly, like they’d been waiting for you all along. When they’re skipped, the fonts get chosen by whatever trended this week, a trend-picked font palette dates faster than a grape left out in the sun, well on its way to becoming a prune.
In identity discovery, your font palette is built through the same beneath-the-soil lens as your colour palette psychographics first, then the archetype we read underneath your brand, then the typefaces that express it. Intentional, strategic and designed to still be right in five years and hopefully beyond.
What does each font family signal?
Every font family walks into the room a little differently.
Serif, the trustworthy original
Thinks before speaking, irons its shirts, has been right about most things since roughly the printing press. Vogue, Lancôme and Medik8 live here. In pricing terms, a well-chosen serif is the typographic firm handshake that lets premium feel earned.
Sans serif, the friendly modern
Arrives in good sneakers, explains things clearly, never makes you feel silly for asking. Google’s territory. Turn up the weight and it starts doing sport, which is how the athletic giants make a sans serif shout.
Slab serif, the cousin who lifts weights
All structure and easy confidence. Sony and Volvo use it to feel current without ever feeling flimsy.
Script, handwritten and decorative, the romantic
Beautiful handwriting, feelings close to the surface, prone to sweeping gestures. In health, beauty and wellness she arrives everywhere (and that’s exactly the caution). Like pink, the pretty script is the category default. If you use one, it needs legibility, restraint and a twist that makes it unmistakably yours.
How many fonts should a brand have?
Here’s where fonts and shoes part ways. With shoes, we maintain (against all available wardrobe evidence) that you can never have too many. Fonts, sadly, you can. One to three is the working range we recommend. A hero font carrying the personality, with one or two quiet support faces doing the everyday reading (think Destiny’s Child… one undeniable lead, immaculate support, absolutely nobody freelancing). Every extra face dilutes recognition. If Vogue or Tiffany & Co. suddenly threw an unfamiliar artistic script into the mix, we’d lose them in the split second we currently know them by.
What should you look for in a brand font?
Choose faces that work as hard as you do. A genuine range of weights (regular, bold, italic and ideally more), legibility at every size from billboard to phone screen with comfort in both print and digital. There are few sadder branding moments than falling for an elegant handwritten font and discovering nobody can read it mid-scroll (a heartbreak we’ve witnessed more than once).
Legibility is bigger than convenience, your type should remain readable for every client who meets it, across ages, eyesight and screens. We’ve written about making your branding accessible for everyone and typography is where accessibility starts.
Where do your fonts live? (The style guide)
Once the palette is chosen, give every font a job in your style guide, which face plays hero, which handles headers, body and captions, plus the sizing, spacing and hierarchy rules that keep it all consistent (fonts, a bit like teenagers, behave beautifully once they have clear responsibilities). That’s how your typography survives new hires, new freelancers, the second location and every touchpoint in between. A brand that stands the test of time is mostly a brand whose rules were written down.
Held that way, something lovely happens over the years… the type stops being a design decision and becomes the handwriting of the business, the thing your regulars recognise in a crowded feed the way they’d know your voice across a crowded room. That’s when you realise the fonts were never really about fonts.
Quick answers on brand fonts
Serif fonts signal establishment, tradition and craft, which is why heritage and premium brands lean on them. Sans serif fonts signal modernity, clarity and approachability. Neither is better, they're just different promises, and the right one depends on the archetype underneath your brand and the clients you want to recognise themselves in it.
They can be beautiful (and that's partly the problem), but the script font is the category default across beauty and wellness, so a generic one blends you into every competitor using the same aesthetic. If a script is genuinely yours, keep it as the hero moment, pair it with an ultra-legible support face and make sure it reads perfectly at small sizes on a phone (the twist is the whole trick).
Run the mismatch test, does the type tell the same story as the experience? A salon full of neons and flower walls wearing structured, serious fonts is sending clients two different messages and they'll trust neither. If your fonts feel like a smaller or earlier version of the business you've become, it's worth working out whether that's a font-level tweak or a sign of something bigger before changing anything.
Ready to hear what your type is saying?
Your fonts are talking either way. The only question is whether they’re telling the story of the business you’ve built or the one you started with.
If you’d like an honest read on your typography (and whether it still matches who you’ve become), book a groundwork call. Fonts, colours and the archetype underneath all get read together inside a rebrand built from the foundations up and when the type finally matches the business you’ve grown into… well, it’s a quietly bloominous little moment. We never tire of it. Bring the fonts you love and the ones you’re not sure about. We’re fluent in font and can’t wait to chat 🌱
